Dexter is coming out of the woods!
Michael C Hall has signed on to play his most famous character at least one more time. Showtime will air a 10 episode, season 9 next year, probably Autumn of 2021. The show will be written by Clyde Phillips, executive producer of the original run.
Dexter Morgan was the hard to like but easy to love serial serial killer killer, and gained fame and fans immediately upon the shows release in 2006. Perfect family man and forensic specialist by day, Dexter suffered murderous tendencies, and channelled them into vigilantism by night. The show was a brilliant balance of suspense and horror.
Much like Game of Thrones, it was mired in controversy by the last season, with a very weak final episode that undid a lot of the character development people had loved for so long. Phillips (who had left the show before the end) has attempted to put fans minds at ease, saying that this is a chance for the show to have a different ending, and might not even acknowledge the original finale.
Speaking with THR he said: "10 years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. In so far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It's a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show, and Showtime was very gracious about that."
Hall has been open to the idea of returning to the character for some time, based on interviews he gave in 2018, but the revival had to have a "killer idea".
"Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago," Showtime Entertainment president Gary Levine said in a statement about the revival. "We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world."
It is not yet known exactly when filming will begin, or which (if any) of the original cast will return.
Dexter was huge on the TV Calendar for many years. It consistently ranked among the most watched and favourited shows on the site for its entire run. It earned a spot as a Premium Background. Let's hope that the revival is as fantastic as Showtime believe it to be!
