NBC to Release New Episodes in January 2024
The Fall TV season of 2023 was postponed by both the writers and actors strikes, which while settled for a number of weeks now, has meant that no scripted shows have aired on the main broadcast channels in the USA. For a while, there were doomsayers predicting that networks wouldn't want to commit to half season runs of their current shows, let alone brand new properties, preferring to hold everything back until NEXT September (2024). But good news! Corporate greed has overcome that outcome, if it was ever likely at all. Which means that we now have dates for all returning and new shows by the Big 4 (I don't think we can count The CW anymore...).
First up is NBC, who have either gotten back to work suspiciously quickly, or are willing to go to air with less episodes in the bag than the other networks, as they are in a rush to get all their scripted shows back in January. The One Chicago franchise returns, as does the Law & Order franchise mid month. A couple of shows that did manage to air in the Fall, Found and Irrational, wrap up their first seasons with a last few episodes of a shortened run. Both shows have been renewed for Season 2 already. Transplant (which is a transplant from CTV) will also finish its run on NBC, but may have already ended in its country of origin. The reboot of Night Court starts earlier in the month with Season 2. La Brea also returns for a final, even shorter (just 6 episodes) Season 3.
The only new scripted show that NBC is putting on for the rest of the season is Extended Family, a multi-camera comedy following a good natured divorce and co-parenting. The line up is surprisingly good, with John Cryer and Abigail Spencer as the afore mentioned seperated couple, and Turk Turklet... er Donald Faison as the new boyfriend. Oh the hijinx of disfunctional family units! The first episode actually previews this side of Christmas, with a little over a week for the second episode in its permanent Tuesday slot.
