In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov finds himself stuck in Moscow and on the wrong side of history, going from riches to rags following the Russian revolution. A Soviet tribunal banishes him to the attic room of an opulent hotel, where, oblivious to the world outside, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love. The Communist Party agrees to let him live, but he is never allowed to set foot outside the Metropole Hotel until the day he dies.
