Celia Dawson and Alan Buttershaw meet up after having not seen each other for about 60 years. They're reunited via Facebook and discover that it was an unfortunate twist of fate that prevented them from getting together all those years ago. Their passionate feelings for each other are soon reignited. After Alan's car is stolen, he and Celia become involved in a car chase. After Celai's car is written off whulat they chase Alan's car they become stranded in Skipton. Celia and Alan ring their respective daughters to pick them up, and find themselves spending even more time together than they thought they would.
Celia and Alan continue their unconventional romance by buying an expensive convertible car instead of an engagement ring. But they do throw a party, where they reveal the reason they never got together 60 years earlier - and who it was that stood in their way. Michael Dobson tries to blackmail Caroline over her relationship with Kate, and although she easily gets rid of him, it's clear she is uneasy about anyone finding out the truth. Meanwhile, Gillian is worried Raff will discover how his father died from Robbie - so decides to make a confession.
Celia and Alan learn that they have very opposing political views and Alan ends up agreeing to get married in church if it's what Celia wants.The vicar has other ideas though after she finds out that neither of them has attended church since 1977.They end up decising to have a civil ceremony at Southowram Hall, an ancient creepy Medieval Hall above Halifax. Alan tells Celia about a ghost in one of the bedrooms and the lights go out, and they find themselves locked inside the ancient building. Raff is cautioned by the police for attacking Paul Jatri. Gillian's appalled after Raff moves out of the farm and in with Robbie. Paul Jatri is attacked for a second time, this time by his fiancé's brothers and ends up in a terrible state. A thunderstorm occurs with Gillian's car suddenly bursting into flames.
Gillian begins to panic as she hasn't heard from her father, and calls Raff at Robbie's house to see if he's heard from him. Raff's still furious with his mother for moving Paul in, and is concerned about Alan, so comes over to Far Slack with Robbie. Still locked in Southowram Hall, Celia and Alan are scared by some strange noises. Celia's believes that there's a ghost while Alan's concerned about some chest pains he suffers with. Alan and Celia wake up to the sound of voices and the curator and his assistant are shocked to realise that the couple have been shut inside the building all night. Gillian, Caroline and Raff are pleased after the phone call comes that the couple have been found.
Alan has trouble deciding which of his old friends he should choose to be his best man. Caroline and Gillian discover they were born on the same day, but their respective celebrations descend into emotional chaos when John discovers his wife has been seeing another woman - and he in turn tells Celia.
Celia reacts badly to John's revelation that Caroline is gay and makes no attempt to accept her daughter's new partner, leading to a bitter argument. Worse still, Alan is saddened and embarrassed by her behaviour, prompting him to call off the wedding. At the farm, Gillian invites Robbie over for dinner, intending to make a go of it with him.
