The survivors left on the island experience chaos as the island begins randomly jumping through time due to Ben's actions. Locke leads a group trying to find stability, encountering figures from the island's past, including Richard Alpert and a young Charles Widmore. Meanwhile, Faraday realizes that the only way to stop the time shifts is to reunite those who left. He theorizes that the survivors can change history, but others believe destiny cannot be altered. Eventually, Locke is instructed to leave the island to bring everyone back, leading him to turn the frozen wheel and stop the time jumps.
In the present, Ben and Jack work to gather the Oceanic Six, convincing them that they must return to fix what they left behind. Desmond and Sun seek answers about Widmore's connection to the island, while Sayid and Hurley struggle with their new lives. When they board Ajira Flight 316, arranged by Eloise Hawking, the plane crashes back onto the island, but they arrive in different time periods. Jack, Kate, and Hurley find themselves in 1977, where the Dharma Initiative is in full operation, while Ben, Sun, and Locke remain in the present, where Locke has mysteriously returned from the dead.
In the past, Sawyer, Juliet, and the others have integrated into Dharma, but Jack's group disrupts the fragile balance. Faraday returns with a bold plan to detonate a hydrogen bomb, believing it will prevent the crash of Oceanic 815 and change their fates. As tensions rise, Jack and his group execute the plan, leading to a climactic battle at the Swan construction site. Juliet, mortally wounded, triggers the bomb, but instead of resetting time, it results in a blinding explosion. Meanwhile, in the present, Locke - now revealed to be the vessel for the island's ancient enemy - manipulates events to gain control, setting the stage for a final confrontation over the island's future.
