In the pilot episode, we are introduced to Joe, Owen and Terry, who have been friends for years. Joe, who once had a dream of becoming a professional golfer, is now a party-store owner who is dealing with his recent separation from his wife. Owen works for his father as an auto-salesman in order to make ends meet and Terry is a part-time actor who is trying to recapture his past glory. The three of them support each other through their mid-life challenges during daily lunch meetings at a local diner and hikes in the hills of Los Angeles.
Joe, who has been living in a hotel room since separating from his wife, begins to think about renting an apartment. Owen's father humiliates him by taking away the demo car he had been using and instead gives the worst car on the lot, much to his wife's dismay. Terry sets out to find the rude driver who almost ran him down.
Joe makes an attempt to bond with his son by spending time with him playing golf. Terry and an actress team up to pose as a married couple at a real estate open house to promote a sale, but Terry takes his role too seriously. Owen attempts to get his sales figures up by taking a new approach.
Owen and his family attend a school charity event with Joe's ex-wife and her new boyfriend. In order to avoid running into his ex while she is on her date, Joe decides to skip the event all together and have dinner with his bookie instead. Meanwhile Terry, who is the auctioneer and emcee for the event, runs into a former flame.
A combination of a bad contractor and a loss of power make Owen and his family move in with his father. Meanwhile, Joe thinks that her daughter is being stalked by a former boyfriend.
Joe tells a vivid story about his first date in 20 years; a story involving poor advice from Terry, a black eye, a Little League player and a misplaced lamp.
Both Joe and Owen are having significant father issues. Joe goes to visit his cynical, retired father with his kids while Owen's father produces a new commercial suggesting that Marcus is his son. Meanwhile, Terry is denied from becoming part of a youth-mentoring program and goes on a quest to find out why he was rejected.
Joe's bookie finds out that Joe is an excellent golfer and exploits his skills in a scam. Meanwhile, Owen's weight gain is worrying his family and Terry moves into a new apartment building and becomes the apartment manager.
When his son's anxiety level rises because of the poor family situation, Joe decides that it is time to buy a house. In order to get some of the money, he places a ,000 bet on a basketball game. Meanwhile, Terry is cast in a B-movie, which makes him feel self-conscious about his diminishing acting career and Owen's father enlists Marcus to become manager of the dealership because he is scaling back his hours.
Joe finally stops gambling after problems in his personal life and in his business. Meanwhile, Terry's troubles continue to deepen due to an acting gig and Owen gets an offer to work at a rival dealership.
