At a Christmas family get-together, a cracker riddle says two people will die before midnight on Boxing Day, and just a few hours later family matriarch Lydia meets an unfortunate end. For local copper DCI Tom Barnaby it's a chance to escape a boring Christmas with his in-laws as he and sidekick DS Dan Scott throw themselves into the investigation.
