Nathaniel, outcast by his brother to a derelict cottage in the countryside outside Whitechapel, finds solace in a fish seller, Mr. Sumner, who visits daily to collect Eels to sell on his fish stall. When Mr. Sumner suddenly dies from a long-suffered illness, Nathaniel offers to help his daughter, Prudence, and her young son, Robin. However, he finds that her brother, Caleb, is less than welcoming. When a thief tries to steal Prudence's takings from the stall, Nathaniel responds by breaking his fingers. Forced to flee, he is later forgiven by Prudence for his actions, but she is later warned of his unhappy tendencies by Augustus. Nathaniel manages to win back her trust, but in the process discovers she is being beaten by Caleb. When he confronts Caleb, the situation turns unhappy, and Nathaniel is forced to watch on as his animal tendencies rise to the surface once more.
