When Rita takes Hallie to the doctor to discuss birth-control options, she makes the shocking discovery that she is pregnant.
Rita accidentally tells Kip that Hallie plans to go to a concert with a new coworker. Meanwhile, Patti, who son just left for college, is spending too much time with Jay for his liking.
Rita fears her boss's reaction to the news of her pregnancy. Those fears are heightened when they give her a promotion before she can tell them the news. Meanwhile, Shannon applies for a scholarship for a space camp.
Rita and Patty give Owen a makeover in order to boost his confidence for an upcoming job interview. Meanwhile, Hallie asks Rita to kick Kip out of her band.
Rita decides to play matchmaker for Patty, who says that she isn't ready to settle down. In order to show her that all marriages aren't simply routine, she goes clubbing with Jay and makes sure that Patty is a witness to their married night out.
To avoid sharing a room with the baby, Hallie decides to move into the attic. In order to clear out all of the junk, the family holds a garage sale. Meanwhile, Jay accidentally learns the baby's gender.
Rita argues with the new neighbor Chuck because he plays loud music at all hours of the night. When Patty learns that Chuck is a bass player, she invites him to join the band, but to an unsatisfactory result.
Shannon's teacher advises Rita and Jay to enroll her in a school for gifted children. Rita tells Hallie to participate in a breast cancer walkathon to keep her mind off of being single.
Rita is inspired by budding-designer Hallie to plan a fashion-show fundraiser, but get discouraged when she sees the dress Hallie has made for her. Meanwhile, Shannon asks Jay for help with learning how to stack cups, but he takes the role way to far.
Rita and Patty get into a fight after an audition goes sour. Meanwhile Hallie goes to a college party without Rita's permission after being told by Patty's son to pursue higher education, which leads Rita and Patty to reconcile in order to find her.
Hallie and Kip try to reconcile their friendship although they are no longer a couple. Meanwhile, Rita and Jay become friends with the parents of Shannon's classmate Brianna, but they are caught in an awkward situation when Shannon decides to end her friendship with her.
When Rita's judgmental mother announces that she is coming for a visit, she begins doing excessive house-cleaning and hiding of junk food. But when she arrives with a much more relaxed attitude, Rita assumes that something is up.

Rita's insecurities about her pregnant body heighten when she meets Jay's pretty new colleague Stephanie (Christine Lakin). Stephanie later reveals to Rita that Jay's been confiding in her about his new-baby fears. Meanwhile, old feelings resurface for Hallie and Kip.
Rita and Patti submit an application for Kip to a performing-arts school without him knowing, and he manages to get an audition. Everyone is excited, except for Hallie, who is upset to learn that it is a boarding school and believes that her mom is trying to keep her and Kip apart.
The band finally lands their first regular paying gig, and Rita is determined to perform, despite being 9 months pregnant.
