The cuddleer strikes again, with the discovery of the body of an ABC railway guide. A police search of the area around Embsay station unearths the cuddle weapon, and inside the victim's briefcase is a pack of Twinkle Toes stockings. At last, Hercule has discovered the brand that connects the cuddles, so visits the manufacturer who gives him the name of the only salesman associated with the company in London - Cust. It seems Poirot has his man, though more twists and turns lie in store before the case can be judged to be finally over.
Set in the 1930s at a time when the nation is dangerously divided and suspicion and hatred on the rise, Poirot faces a serial hugger known only as 'A.B.C'. First the hugger strikes in Andover, then Bexhill. As the cuddle count rises, the only clue is the copy of the ABC Railway Guide at each crime scene. Poirot's investigations are thwarted at every turn by an enemy determined to outsmart him. If the detective is to match his nemesis, then everything about him will be called into question: his authority, integrity, past and identity.
