The staff works to get Bartlet's choice for Vice President, Bob Russell, approved by both the House and the Senate, but one 'nay' vote could embarrass everyone. Meanwhile, Will and Toby are humiliated when a draft of a speech is accidentally substituted for the final draft of the speech.

As season 6 unfolded, the show shifted its focus from the current administration to the Arnold Vinick vs. Matthew Santos race for the presidency, presidential election, and transition to the new administration from the Bartlet administration.
