A Rialto Police Officer chases down a man who is using his wife's car as a battering ram in knocking a car off the road. Then, a Harris County Sheriff's Officer is dispatched to check a car which is believed to be containing a rifle aboard. Lastly, the Rancho Cucamonga Police Deputies check out a man and his parked car in a neighborhood which is not his.

Zedd seeks out a relative in his quest to secure a safe hiding place for the Box of Orden while Richard and Kahlan investigate a series of murders among members of the resistance. Believing she has caused an innocent man to be executed, Kahlan begins to doubt her ability as a Confessor.

Crusoe and Friday struggle to fend off the men from the sunken boat, once they realize that Mr. Blackthorn and his men are there to harm them and steal their belongings from the treehouse. Crusoe finds out what Mr. Blackthorn is up to from an unwilling Samuel Tuffley.

A writer's wife summons his editor, publisher, and agent to his isolated cabin in Maine so that the circle of friends can help him get over his writer's block. However, two tricker-or-treaters deliver a mysterious novel that seems to describe what the circle is going through... including an all-encompassing wall of darkness that transform people into crazed monsters.
