Annie's father, Charles shows up at the Camden household for a weekend visit as Ginger supposedly needs to get away for a bit. But Eric forgot to tell his wife about it and nearly everyone in the Camden household is too busy to spend time with the elderly man. Meanwhile, Grandpa Charles takes Simon to get his learner's permit for driving and they end up being the center of a televised police-pursuit. Lastly, Eric lies to Annie about his plans for the day, which include a trip to Glenoak Hospital.

John reluctantly agrees to buy a poor child a Christmas gift and then discovers that he has to deliver it as well; Bob visits his mother, who still treats him like a kid.

Angel's baby Connor has been suddenly brought into his life. But this situation grows deadly when various groups have heard of the prophecy concerning Angel and are out to get the baby.

Ally helps a minister who was fired from his church for not believing in God. Ever since his wife was brutally murdered, he has been questioning his beliefs and he asks Ally to talk to his son. Ally is surprised to see Malcolm again and encourages him to sing at his father's service after he is hired back. Meanwhile, John takes a case opposite a mayor who cancelled the Christmas parade of his town due to a disaster in which people died. Very moved, John proves that Christmas is what they need the most in this time of deep grief. Back in the office, Jenny and Elaine confront each other about Elaine's performance with Glenn in the office's Christmas party.

When a veteran cop named Max is murdered, Jordan and Max's old partner, Eddy Winslow, find the cop-killer and bring him in. However, when the cop-killer dies in police custody, Garrett is forced to open an investigation. Garrett also chooses to skip his annual Christmas dinner with ex-wife Maggie and his daughter Abby, and instead chooses to dine with Lily, Thailand-style. Meanwhile, Trey worries that Nigel's invitation to the ski slopes is actually an invitation to have an affair.

Carrie's boss, Pruzan, has his first big case as partner, and Carrie is overwhelmed with work. To complicate matters more, the case involves testimony from a delivery driver and Pruzan wants Doug to be the expert witness because he drives for IPS. Although Doug is really excited about working with Carrie, she isn't as thrilled with the idea. After Doug shows up to get prepped for the trial, Carrie is panicked that he is going to embarrass himself and her, so she tries to get Deacon to testify instead, which of course, hurts Doug's feelings. Pruzan is insistent that Doug be the witness, and after a lot of begging from Carrie, he agrees to come back and help her out.

Tonight, Al Sharpton was booked on the show as a guest. Unfortunately he did not appear, so Jon Stewart conducted the interview with Steve Colbert in his place, answering questions as if he were Al Sharpton.

Tragedy strikes when Steve Waring leaves his son to look after his sick mother. On Darwin Ward, a blind man regains his sight after a relatively minor procedure on his lungs, and a cantankerous young homeless man causes problems for Simon Shaughnessy on his first day at work at Holby City, assisting Stan Ashleigh. A heart patient whose son appears not to want the burden of caring for him prompts a spat between Alex Adams & Samantha Kennedy, leading them to explore their personal experiences of caring for their fathers.
