Riley is looking for Buffy at her house, but all he finds is Spike in her room smelling her sweater. Spike informs Riley of Buffy's mom's illness and rubs it in his face that Buffy told the vampire about it before her own boyfriend. Riley goes to the hospital, and Buffy gives him plenty to do, like taking care of Dawn and patrolling, but what Riley really wants is to take care of Buffy. He ends up taking Dawn to an amusement park where they talk about a few things. Despite her good intentions, Dawn makes Riley feel like he's not good enough for Buffy and that he can't compare to Angel. Later on in the episode he feels even further away from being close to Buffy, and he goes and gets himself bitten by a vamp whore. Meanwhile, at the magic shop Giles accidentally sells two very bad, powerful ingredients for a spell to a "young woman", who turns out to be the all powerful lady who creamed Buffy the last time they fought. Max attends conference about genetic engineering. She sees Lydecker at the conference, but he doesn't recognize her. Before she can slip away unseen, the conference attendees are taken hostage by a group of anti-genetic engineering terrorists. Max can't use her abilities to escape for fear of being noticed. Logan negotiates to free the women and children in exchange for himself. Max is able to intervene to save Logan from an almost certain death. She takes out Lydecker in the process and stops the terrorists. Meanwhile at Jam Pony, the gang are riveted by the television coverage of the hostage situation and unaware that Max is involved. Herbal insists the terrorist situation is all part of God's plan.

Frasier hires an authentic English butler after his original boss passes away, achieving one of his many fancy dreams. Ferguson is great with the Cranes, and it doesn't take him long to start giving his opinions on the family routine. First he gives hints to Frasier on how he can charm opera board members and perhaps even get invited to join them. After that he warns Daphne about employee/employer relationships and how the social barrier is never broken. He helps Frasier organize a fancy dinner party, and Mel unexpectedly shows up, ruining once more Niles and Daphne's plans of being together. When Mel agrees on spending New Year's with some friends in the company of Niles, he draws the line and breaks up the entire marriage scam they were carrying on. Mel is devastated, and Daphne, relieved. Seeing that true love between boss and help can exist, Ferguson resigns to chase after someone he cared deeply, but never had the courage to do anything due to the social barriers.
