The sisters try to help a mermaid who made a pact with an evil water demon known as the Sea Haig, and now regrets her choice. Meanwhile, Cole wants Phoebe back, Phoebe wants a divorce, Piper wants to protect her and Leo's unborn baby, and Paige just wants to balance her new job as a social worker with her position as a Charmed One.

A miscast spell leads to Phoebe becoming a mermaid, and an emotionally scarred Phoebe decides to run from her problems with Cole and embrace her new life in the sea. Meanwhile, Piper casts a spell to stop her panic attacks, but it goes wrong, and the water demon targets Phoebe, leading Paige to go to Cole for help.

Meadow clashes with her parents when she decides to drop out of college and travel to Europe. Tony sends her to a psychologist, but it only makes things worse.
Christopher is made a capo in Paulie's crew while Paulie serves a jail term, but Christopher shows a lack of talent for leadership.
Danielle's under cover work with Adriana falls flat. The Feds then bring Adriana in for a meeting, threatening to send her up for drug possession if she doesn't turn on the Sopranos.

Cell phone drop-out causes difficulties for Richard Lewis, as an allergic reaction leaves him and Larry scrambling to get his Christian Scientist girlfriend presentable for a walk down the red carpet at the Emmys. Meanwhile, race relations once again flummox Larry.

Steve and Susan have had an argument about their future, and Susan storms out of Steve's flat in tears. While Steve tries repeatedly to ring Susan, his courage failing every time, the girls are locked in a debate over the merits of 1471, and what it means if the phone 'chirps'. Eventually the tension at both ends of the phone gets too much. The boys and the girls set out for 'the Temple of Woman': in the girls' case, a beauty salon; in the boys' case, a lap dancing club.
