In this very special episode, prior to the death of Sgt. Morgan, Ruthie corresponds with the soldier by e-mail for a school project and she shares the letter with her family. Also, "The Colonel" drops by to tell Ruthie about Sgt. Morgan's death. Ruthie and Eric hold a memorial service in honor of Sgt. Morgan with actual Marine Corps. and family members of Morgan in attendance. In honor of the late Sgt. Morgan's service and commitment to his country, Eric asks everyone to advocate good deeds and go out into the commuity, as the family does. Also, Ruthie makes a video where she is singing Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" and is sending it to the Marine Corps. in memory of Morgan.

The next morning at work Elaine feels horrible for not giving her full self at the audition and Nelle tries to comfort her. Richard's father seeks for his help. He's being sued by his former secretary for sexual harassment. He fired her because he was falling in love with her, which damages his 40 yearlong marriage.

Carrie and Doug begin preparing for tax time and realize that their charitable giving leaves a little to be desired. In an effort to get out of feeling guilty and to make amends for what they see as "selfish living" in the past year, they decide to make a donation to the local kid's library at Deacon's son's school. However, Carrie's charitable spirit starts to be about recognition rather than the actual joy of giving. When the administration mistakenly thinks the Heffernans gave $500 rather than $50, Doug and Carrie scramble to keep the recognition without having to pay the price.
