Sabrina attends her grandmother's funeral, described by her mother as "the most despicable character". However, she was filthy rich. Is her will written in such a way as to require Sabrina to be married in order to inherit her fortune? Are there wedding bells in her and Jimmy's future?
A social worker visits the Chance house to investigate a claim, but when she spots some of the tactics the family employs to keep Maw Maw under control, she starts to suspect the Chances of elder abuse and threatens to take her away. Meanwhile Sabrina and Jimmy test the boundaries of their new engagement when Sabrina wants Jimmy to part with his beloved T-shirt.
The Chance family devises a ridiculously intricate plan to break Maw Maw out of a state-run nursing facility. The plan backfires when Virginia notices how gentle the staff is with Maw Maw, and begins to think that she might be better off in her new home. Meanwhile, Jimmy fears that he's destined to go crazy in his old age, and interrogates the other elderly patients for tips on staying sane.
In an effort to find out more about the married life, Sabrina and Jimmy attend a retreat, prompting Virginia and Burt to also join posing as an engaged couple; and Sabrina is surprised when her mother attends with a young lover. Meanwhile, Barney is in charge of babysitting Maw Maw.
Sabrina asks Jimmy to spend some time with her gay best friend and his partner on Halloween, prompting Jimmy to convince Burt into doing some investigative work at a local gay bar. However, Burt starts spending a lot of time there, causing concern in Virginia.
When Jimmy finds a childhood photo of himself with an older boy and a family he doesn't know, Burt reveals that he and Virginia gave him up for adoption for a short time when they were teen parents. Jimmy recruits Sabrina to forge a scheme to meet and bond with his would-have-been big brother Brad. Meanwhile, Virginia and Burt question their decision to take Jimmy back when the would-be adoptive parents turn out to be affluent and nurturing.
When Natesville holds its annual Thanksgiving Radish Harvest Festival, Jimmy is determined to sell the most candy bars around town, so that Hope can ride atop the town's Thanksgiving Day float. But when Jimmy doesn't sell enough to win the contest, Virginia and Maw Maw unveil a dark, mafia-inspired family secret that could lead the Chances to victory.
When the annual Angry Bowel Syndrome (ABS) 1K walk comes to Natesville, the Chance family decides to band together and support the cause that Jimmy suffered from as a child. Meanwhile, Burt and Virginia start to feel the effects of aging, and Jimmy struggles to support Sabrina in a fight with her ex-boyfriend when she is clearly in the wrong.
Jimmy confronts Sabrina about only doing the "fun stuff" with Hope, and none of the heavy lifting of parenthood. Sabrina gets the chance to prove him wrong when Jimmy joins Barney as a Natesville Auxiliary cop for the day, and leaves her with Hope. Meanwhile, Virginia and Burt are determined to capture a squirrel that has been harassing all of the other squirrels in the neighborhood.
Like the Mayans, Virginia is convinced that the world is going to end on December 21, 2012, so she uses her extreme couponing skills to stock up on supplies and forces the family to train for the apocalypse. Meanwhile, Jimmy is determined to give Hope the best Christmas he can, since it will likely be the first one she remembers and Maw Maw tries to knock a few more items off her bucket list before the end of the world.
When Jimmy and Sabrina decide to buy a new car that will be safer for Hope, they discover that Jimmy has a rock-bottom credit score that dates back to when he was a child. Burt and Virginia confess that they had maxed out a credit card in Jimmy's name, and plead with their bank representative Dennis to clear his debt, even if it means giving up their new DeLorean.
Burt tells Jimmy that he needs to buy Sabrina a nice engagement ring, even if she claims she doesn't need one, so Jimmy starts volunteering for a series of exotic medical experiments to come up with the cash. Meanwhile Virginia has been pawning her engagement ring for years behind Burt's back to pay for odds and ends. But when Jimmy visits the pawnshop and falls in love with his own mom's ring, her secret may be out.
Frank wants to throw Jimmy a memorable bachelor party, but Jimmy resists the idea, citing the crazy things that tend to happen when he goes wild (such as impregnating serial huggers). But, when Sabrina convinces him to cut loose, things get a little out of control and Frank reveals an ulterior motive for encouraging Jimmy's outlandish behavior.
The wedding day is finally here and Sabrina's mom has hired the camera crew from "Modern Family" to capture the whole blessed event. But a series of catastrophes threatens to ruin the day, including a battle between Maw Maw and Reverend Bob. So Burt and Virginia scramble to save the ceremony and keep Jimmy and Sabrina in ignorant, matrimonial bliss.
Jimmy and Sabrina get a wedding present from Barney that entails an excursion to Los Angeles for a taping of Hope's favorite TV show, "Yo Zappa Do", but Jimmy's fear of flying means it's a road trip for the whole family.
Jimmy signs on as an extra after Hope is hired as an actress on Yo Zappa Do, but the show's main star Trevor intends to make Jimmy's life miserable. Meanwhile, Burt tries to pitch a new landscaping design to the show's studio chief, and Maw Maw has a debt to settle with her late ex-husband.
After finding out that their storage locker is up for action, Burt and Virginia come to a realization that their embarrassing home video has ended up in the hands of a couple. Meanwhile, Sabrina tries to find out more about Jimmy's sleepwalking habit.
Sabrina is visited by the Ghost of Arbor Day Past after having a disagreement with the Chances regarding their celebration of the holiday.
It's a "My Name is Earl" reunion as the Chances throw a birthday party for Hope. Jason Lee reprises his guest-star role as former rock star Smokey Floyd, and he is joined by guest stars Jaime Pressly, Ethan Suplee, Nadine Velazquez and Eddie Steeples as Natesville locals who all band together to save the party.
Sabrina is excited to introduce her new friend, Rachel, to the family, but Virginia and Burt are shocked when they realize Rachel is the girl who once broke Jimmy's heart.
