The hopeful apprentices write and produce an original song to be performed on XM satellite radio, live. Capital Edge works well together as a team and finds an artist with a song that truly embodies the cafe feeling that the XM executives are looking for, while Excel Corporation struggles with Clay, who distracts the team from its objective, finding a great alternative rock song. In the end, Capital Edge dominates and is rewarded with a helicopter ride around New York City, accompanied by Donald Trump. Excel, however, is sent to the boardroom, where all three teammates are interrogated about what they personally did wrong on the task. Ultimately, Trump is forced to rely on the candidates' histories, deciding to keep Randal and Rebecca based on their former success, while firing Clay, who has caused one too many arguments.

When Grace decides to try on one of the dead wife's rare dresses before the ceremony, she experiences a 'wardrobe malfunction,' which she must try to conceal.

For Neela, what begins as a routine ride-along with Gates and Zadro turns into a defining day when a commercial jet and a private plane crash over Chicago. As Clemente manages the trauma in the ER, Pratt joins Neela on-scene. Luka and Abby wake up together at Luka's, but the crash soon takes them back to work, where the tension between Luka and Clemente continues. As patients flood in, Sam recalls Haleh when extra nurses are needed, and earns Eve's approval. Luka and Abby care for a patient with severe facial injuries while Pratt struggles to save a patient with a heart injury. Ray's youthful friend returns and creates a nuisance. As the day ends, Luka and Abby talk, and awkwardly decide to stay "just friends," while Neela has a welcome, and overdue, visitor.

After young Shawn Hopkins disappears one night after leaving the arcade, his parents soon begin to believe that the team is not doing everything to find their son, and are shocked to learn that he has been gambling and has also been seen with a local drug dealer. After learning that Shawn had taken up the cause of a friend who had been raped, Larry and Susan Hopkins are relieved to learn that their son wasn't doing anything wrong, but worried that he still might not come home.
