While travelling to return the Helmet of Hermes to the King of Thebes, Xena and Gabrielle rescue Genia, a virgin who is about to be sacrificed willingly by religious zealots in exchange for protection from a warlord. Xena and Gabrielle think that introducing Genia to Aphrodite would convince her that throwing away her life for a god is a bad idea but it backfires on them.

The family wins a trip to Delaware, but Homer refuses to pay the tax on the ticket, so they ride the rails and meet a hobo who sings and tells them some tall tales. The first is the tale is about "Paul Bunyan" and here we are treated to Homer playing the role of Paul as a giant doofus, a natural role for him. The next tale shows us Lisa as "Connie Appleseed," who tries to convince the pioneers to eat apples instead of buffalo. The third tale isn't really tall, it's a Mark Twain tale about Tom Sawyer (Bart) and Huckleberry Finn (Nelson), whom go on the run when Huck won't marry Becky (Lisa).

With Ricky's life still a mess, Julian tries to convince him that it's time to marry Lucy. Reluctant at first, Ricky changes his mind when Julian suggests that people will always think that Ricky is gay unless he marries Lucy. Julian's engagement present to Ricky is the '76 New Yorker, which for weeks was up on blocks in his front yard, and is now made operational thanks to a few purloined replacement parts.
