Buffy and Spike begin to train the potential Slayers, while Willow performs a locator spell and discovers another potential at Sunnydale High. At first, it seems as though Dawn has been chosen, but she soon discovers that her friend Amanda is the one. Dawn helps Amanda fight off a vampire trapped in the school and then goes back to being a 'normal' person. Xander gives her an inspiring speech, which helps her deal with her missed opportunity.

Rory is set up by the manipulative Francie who convinces Paris that Rory has been plotting against her. Cheryl and Dana offer to help Laraine pick out a dress for the police ball, and after realizing she has feelings for Danny, Cheryl convinces Jim to talk to Danny about asking her to the ball. Cheryl reveals to Jim that if it wasn't for Danny, they might never have gotten together, as they remember the time they met at a bar back in the 80's. But when Danny finally has the guts to talk to Laraine, he finds out that Andy already asked her out. Dana asks why can't she be Danny's date, since she made out with Cheryl's boyfriend the night she met Jim just so he would get out of the way. They all try to convince Andy to step aside what could be true love, but Andy reminds them of how he pretended to have a heart attack just so Jim would get rid of his girlfriend the night he met Cheryl. Finally, Andy agrees to help Danny and Laraine, as Jim and Cheryl conclude that despite all the help they got they still would have met.

After being separated from the service, it surfaces that he created the flaw himself to exploit it for his own financial gain outside the service. Meanwhile Harm finds himself being sued by an old woman who he rear ends.

NOVA chronicles the discovery of a "living fossil", a fish called the coelacanth that has remained relatively unchanged since prehistoric times. The program recalls Darwin's prediction that some creatures would have not undergone any major adaptations due to selective pressures and would have remained relatively the same since prehistoric times.

Since Vic's still raw over Tio's death, the gruesome beating of Armadillo, and the fact that Claudette won't lay off of his connection to Tio, he decides to take the day off and leave his Strike Team in David's care. While they're off busting male hookers working outside David's campaign headquarters, Vic and his old partner, Joe, check in on an old enemy - Fleetwood. Joe still holds a grudge against the man that had him kicked off the force. Now it's time for payback. He knows Fleetwood's still scheming, so he gets Vic to back him up on a bust that ends up going horribly awry. Meanwhile, Danny discovers that Julien didn't back up her version of the shooting at the Al-Thanis' and now may be pulling desk duty for the rest of her career unless things are cleared up. In the midst of all this chaos, a young man enters the barn with a severed arm and drops it on Dutch's desk. Once he discovers that the arm belongs to a woman who's still alive, he and Claudette find themselves running against the clock to find her before she dies.

Now that Vic is back to work, he and Shane go undercover as dirty cops to find the culprit behind a robbery/homicide at an Armenian jewelry store. Meanwhile Dutch and Claudette discover that a gun turned in during a Toys for Guns Drive is linked to an old case of Claudette's. In a bid for the Asian community's support in the upcoming election, David assigns Danny and Julien to keep an eye on a priest and his Korean parish. Danny is forced to deal with the fallout form the shooting of an Arab man.
