In the sixth season-opener, the good reverend's (Eric Camden) stress level rises when he learns that Matt has lost his job at the hospital and is relying on his friends to find him new work. Meanwhile, Simon is adding to Eric's tensions by pressuring him to let him get his learner's permit. At the same time, Lucy breaks off her engagement to Jeremy and just cries in her room and refuses to discuss what happened in New York between her and Jeremy. Even lodger Robbie, still longing for Mary, is moping around the house when she returns to New York to be with Wilson. Lastly, Annie's behavior has Eric wondering what's going on with her, while she is overcome by hormonal changes and suspects she's pregnant - but later finds out it's menopause.

While attending an anger management class, and not being able to hold down a job, Jordan receives a call from her old boss, Garret, about getting her old job as a medical examiner back. Meanwhile, Garret who deals with the death of his ailing mother and losing a promotion to a colleague, begins to debate if he even wants to remain at his job. When a young Jane Doe is found dead in an alley frequented by prostitutes, Jordan makes a startling discovery. Even more startling is how the Jane Doe is connected to a city councilman who committed suicide, and where the murder evidence leads.

The Heffernans are again thinking about getting pregnant, just four months after Carrie's miscarriage. But there's one problem: Arthur. Now that his last friend from the senior center has moved away, Arthur naps all day. By the time Doug and Carrie get home, Arthur is full of energy and has no one but them to unleash it on. Quality time alone for the couple is impossible. That is, until Doug hires an attractive dog walker to occupy an unsuspecting Arthur: she takes him for a stroll three times a week, under the guise that she's a student interested in learning about his World War II experiences
