The Glenoak Community is making a big fuss over a petition that is protesting the apparently unfair firing of one of Ruthie's teachers, Mrs. Miller at her private school. Although, Matt knows the real reason of why she is leaving since she has been to his hospital after being diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, which leads to the embarrassment of many of the petitioners - including Simon and Lucy when they encounter her brother who's a teacher at their high school. Also, Annie's father Charles drops by at the Camden's for a visit. Annie is then surprised and shocked when her father passes on news to Eric - to tell her that she has a sister, Lily.

Ruth impresses upon him that he could lose, and would then more or less have to shut down his practice. He finally decides to settle when he realizes how many people, both patients and employees, depend on him. Unfortunately, his decision doesn't sit well and he goes and tells Vinny that he will absolutely not settle. Jake and Bob try to think of the worst way to die. Linda pretends to like an ugly sweater/vest that Margaret's unemployed husband knits for her, and Margaret catches Linda in her lie by giving her one of her own to wear.

Sydney Gale hires Cage & Fish to represent her in court. She's been sued for wrongful termination, and Richard and John take the case. An employee is suing Sydney because he doesn't want to 'serve' her anymore. In her firm, she only hires men who desire her, and thus make the company a lot like a beehive and Sydney their queen. John and Richard are driven crazy with lust, but they win the case. Meanwhile, Reverend Mark Newman is once again having problems concerning Lisa Knowles's performance at church. Now she's musically attacking Rev. Mark's new girlfriend, who's also a member of the choir. After Jackson's strategy fails, it's in Nelle's hand to fix the situation.

Sean rescues a local TV celebrity who is in trouble with his kayak. This brings the team a lot of media attention, and because Sean turns down the offer of a TV interview, he is offered a week at the Hilton, comp'd, because of what he did. Sean, though, does not like to take freebies either so he declines. But he has a different issue: he is about to go on his required annual leave for a week. Being the dedicated and at times obsessive guy that he is, Sean is having a difficult time letting go. Zack tries to interest Sean in joining a canoe race that he and Jason are doing for a competition. But Sean is not interested at this time. Brian has a solution: one of his friends, Jimmy Confair, a Hawaiian, is having difficulty with his boat-and also with getting over the death of his wife. Doug and Carrie meet the neighbors after a hurricane destroys both of their backyards. Carrie breaks their hearts by telling the truth and rejects the idea of a combined backyard. So the neighbors retaliate by disrupting their privacy by making an aboveground pool in a small space. But as Carrie tries to mount a lawsuit, Doug can't deny the temptation and joins the other side. But before the pool goes down, Carrie takes a quick swim and later, Doug tries to enjoy the lawn sprinkler.
